1 in 4 Fail to Claim Potentially Life-Changing Tax Credit
Imagine discovering an extra $2,200. That's the average amount the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) typically provides Utah tax filers who claim it. It's also nearly 12% of the monthly income for one third of Utah families; the kind of money that could easily be life-changing for so many. But why does it so often go unclaimed?

Chairman Ryan Gets 62 Percent of His Huge Budget Cuts from Programs for Lower-Income Americans -CBPP
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s budget plan would get at least 62 percent of its $5.3 trillion in nondefense budget cuts over ten years (relative to a continuation of current policies) from programs that serve people of limited means. This stands a core principle of President Obama’s fiscal commission on its head and violates basic principles of fairness. - CBPP

Poverty in America likely to get worse, report finds
"The report warns that the numbers will continue to rise, because although the recession is technically over, its continued impact on cuts to welfare budgets and the quality of new, often poorly paid, jobs can be expected to force many more people in to poverty. It is also difficult for those already under water to get back up again." -the Guardian

FIC Low Income Safety Net Follow Up Letter to State Social Services Appropriations Subcommittee

These legislators face tough decisions in balancing the budget, but as advocates for Utah's low-income population we must remind them to continue to support efforts to assist Utah's vulnerable populations. Please email fic@caputah.org before November 3, 2011 (a week from today) if your organization would like to add its voice to asking these committee members to protect services to Utah's low-to moderate-income population.

Rate of multi-generational homes rises in Utah - Salt Lake Tribune
Of most concern is the skewing effect on the picture of poverty, said Drew Martinez, senior policy analyst for the organization. “If you have high- and low-income families in the same household, that is masking the low-income family’s situation.” The census said the official poverty rate in households with young adults living with their parents is 8.4 percent but based on only their own income, 45.3 percent would fall below the poverty threshold.
